April Meeting at Pavilion

We're celebrating the warmer weather by holding our April meeting tonight at the Pavilion at 6:30pm. If you want to drop by, everyone is welcome-more is definitely better at the SPORTSMAN'S CLUB.

We'll be talking about a fish fry planned for June as well as participating in the Paint Lick Yard Sale event on the first Saturday in June, 4th.

2011 A Year of New Beginnings

It was a bittersweet farewell on Tuesday, November 16 as Deborah Messenger, PLSC President said a fond farewell to the men and women gathered at the 2010 final PLSC event, a community open house hosted by the Friends of Paint Lick, Inc.

Although Deborah's term of office as president does not end until December 2011, escalating responsibilities with her family forced Deborah to resign from her position on the organization's executive board. Expressing great regard for the community's assistance throughout the last two years of her presidency, Deborah assured the group gathered she will remain involved as a strong advocate and member for the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club and its mission as a center of community activities as they move forward into 2011.

Through December 31, Deborah will assist the Executive Board as needed to ensure a smooth transition for members filling the positions of President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Nominations for officers will take place over the next two weeks, with a final vote by the membership to be held on January 18, at the regularly scheduled members' meeting.

October 9: PLSC's Annual Fish Fry

PLSC CC Sprouts New Growth

A hearty thanks to Bob Baker for seeding the grounds of the PLSC Community Center. Sixty-five pounds of Kentucky red fescue, 10-12 bales of straw, and a gentle rain should produce sprouts of new growth across the Center's green space.

Demolition & Salvage

In the early morning hours of Monday, August 23, MCM Demolition, Inc. arrived on scene unloading an excavator to begin the process of demolition and salvage of our flood-ravaged 55 year old building.

Within two hours of work, a crew of one had the building reduced to a pile of splintered wood, torn vinyl and shattered glass. Working throughout the next few days, MCM Demolition will work at no-cost to PLSC's budget to assist in the deconstruction of the building and the revitalization of the grounds.

We wish to express our appreciation to the Garrard County Flood Debris Management Grant for their in-kind support through the transportation and disposal of all deconstruction debris.

While saddened to see the building demolished, we're pleased to see the outpouring of support from the Commonwealth as we welcome this opportunity to rebuild and move forward into 2011.

Within a few weeks, the grounds of the PLSC Community Center will reopen to families, friends and PLSC members alike. Watch postings of our upcoming fall public events!

August 28: Old Fashioned Ice Cream Soical

What's summer without fresh churned ice cream?

Strawberry, butter pecan, peach, rum raisin, vanilla custard, or...it's your choice. With an average of 98% of American households enjoying this creamy, cold dessert, here's a free event, everyone can enjoy!

Whether young or young-at-heart, you're sure to enjoy this cool treat on a hot night! After all, hot August evenings and ice cream are made to be enjoyed together.

So, dust off the ice cream freezer, fill'er up your favorite ice cream-making ingredients and come out for this community night of ice cream. No ice cream freezer, no problem, just bring a quart or two of your favorite ice cream or sherbet or try the recipe below for coffee can ice cream and join us for this night of fun!

Music provided by Andy Blyth and his wife, Sue Peterson Blyth will be a backdrop for this community party! Mark your calendars now for August 28, 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the PLSC Community Center, 52 Hammock Alley, Paint Lick. We'll provide all the toppings, cookies, brownies, and service ware. To make ice cream in a coffee can:

In 1 lb. coffee can mix all ingredients. Seal can lid well with duct tape. Put small, sealed can inside larger 3 lb. can. Pack ice and 1 cup salt around small can. Put lid on large can and duct tape closed. Roll back & forth on a large towel (optional) for 15 minutes. Open large can and dump ice and water. Wipe small can dry and open. Stir mix, scraping sides of can. Additional ingredients, (e.g.: cookie crumbs, chopped nuts), can be added now. Reseal small can and place back in larger can. Repack with salt and ice. Continue rolling for 10 minutes more. Open large can and dump ice and water. Wipe small can dry and open. Enjoy!

Vanilla Ice Cream
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup light cream
1 beaten egg (or use equivalent reconstituted dried)
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Chocolate Ice Cream
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup light cream
1/2 cup sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/8 tsp. salt

Thanks to the generous support from MCM Demolition, Inc., http://www.mcmdemolitioninc.com/index.html PLSC Community Center has received an in-kind match for the deconstruction of the PLSC building. MCM Demolition, Inc., a locally owned and operated demolition company from Lexington, Kentucky heard our plea for assistance, and stepped forward to meet our August 31 deadline.

Founded in 2002, MCM Demolition, Inc., is considered one of Kentucky's premiere demolition companies. MCM Demolition will bring over 25 years of experience as they work to ensure the integrity of our community center, while deconstructing our flood-damaged building. Priding themselves on their one-on-one communications with clients, the PLSC CC board of directors has been impressed with daily communications between our small non-profit organization and MCM Demolition as work details have been finalized including the demolition permit, asbestos survey, and 10-day notification to the Division of Air Quality.

Starting, Monday, August 23, MCM Demolition, Inc. will be on-site to start the building's deconstruction, including foundation walls, slabs, and footings and will rough grade the disturbed areas following the demolition activities.

Through utilization of funds from the Garrard County Flood Debris Management Grant, four to six 30- and 40-yard roll-off dumpsters have been positioned to accommodate any refuse not utilized by MCM Demolition, Inc. during the deconstruction progress. Thanks to MCM Demolition, Inc. in-kind donation of labor, equipment, and mobilization; and the in-kind disposal funding from Garrard County Flood Debris Management Grant, our Center will save more than $6,000 during this deconstruction phase from the May 2010 flooding.

Meet, Greet & Eat

Join other members of the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club on Tuesday, July 20 at the Friends of Paint Lick building for a feast to satisfy your soul, lift your heart, and tickle your taste buds. Starting at 6 p.m. this summer potluck picnic offers a great opportunity for you to get to know other community members at a more personal level, extend your professional/business networks, and benefit from exchange of kitchen tips and recipes.

Whether you like to cook, grill, bake or EAT. Bring prepared dishes and your favorite lawn chair to Friends of Paint Lick, where activities will be held both indoors as well as outdoors. Drinks, plates, plastic ware, and napkins will be provided.

This dinner is open to all active and former members of the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club as well as anyone wanting to be a Club member. Guests welcome.

Its a Success - Community Garden Surplus Night!

Thanks to the support of local farmer's market vendors and community gardeners, the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club Community Center offered a variety of organically grown produce at its first Garden Pantry on Thursday, July 15. Held under the shade of the shelter and old sycamore trees along Paint Lick Creek, more than 20 guests shopped amidst the trays, boxes, baskets and buckets of produce.

Offered at no cost, vendors and customers bartered and traded leeks, carrots, beets, cabbage, corn, tomatoes, sweet and hot banana peppers, garlic, basil, chives, dill, zucchini, summer squash, acorn squash, cucumbers, strawberry plants, aloe, purple cornflower, dried lavender, daylillies, and more.

If you missed last evening's Garden Pantry don't despair, watch local news media in the coming weeks for the next Pantry date announcement. Word among the market vendors suggest a date mid-September.

Garden Pantry

Do you need a bushel of tomatoes? A basket of blueberries? A five-gallon bucket of apples or a peck of peaches? A handful of fresh picked parsley, rosemary or thyme? Do you have a wheelbarrow full of cucumbers or a feed sack of fresh corn?

Whether your a producer or a consumer, this event is for you. There's no exchange of monies, just commodities.

Date: Thursday, July 15
Time: 5 - 7 p.m.

This is an open market, vendors should bring their own tables and chairs, if needed. The market will be held under shade of the trees and outdoor shelter on-site of the Paint Lick Community Center aka Paint Lick Sportsman's Club.

Even if the drier weather has withered your garden, bring a packet of seeds, flower bulbs, or other trade items to barter for a few goodies from other community members.

A Day of Action

Each year, volunteers with the United Way mobilize communities to advance the common good on the National Day of Action. Held today, June 23, 2010, volunteers across the Commonwealth demonstrated what it means to LIVE UNITED, to make a positive impact within the community - building blocks for a good life.

Working to strengthen the Paint Lick Community, eight volunteers: Clark Alexander, Lynn Cox, Sherry Davis, Thomas Hobbs, Andrew King, Casey King, Nathan Mick, and John Wilson met at the Paint Lick Community Center aka Paint Lick Sportsman's Club to assist in the clean-up of the outdoor pavilion/shelter.

Where weeds once grew, the grounds were raked and flowers planted. Where flood-lodged debris filled nooks and crannies of the shelter's rafters, hands painstakingly removed twigs, leaves, and bits of torn plastic bags. Where peeling and chipped paint were visible, brushes of white and green coated surfaces afresh.

Thanks to these eight individuals, and the Day of Action initiative, the shelter is brighter and Paint Lick Community Center has a renewed energy to act not just on this day, but throughout the year!

PLSC Particpates in Party on the Square

More than 1,000 people attended the fourth year of the anti-litter Party on the Square in Lancaster, Kentucky on Friday, June 18, 2010. Throughout the evening, people enjoyed live music and free food, and youth and adults alike "shopped" through more than 30 different activities and booths featuring the arts, recycling, environmental conservation, education, and recreation.

This is the second year, the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club has participated as a part of Garrard County's annual six week anti-litter beautification campaign. For the 2010 celebration, the PLSC showcased bottle biology. An easy project for everyone! Featuring a recycled 2-liter soda bottle, a handful of pebbles, 1 1/2 cup potting soil, and 5-6 pre-soaked sunflower seeds, each booth visitor walked away with a mini greenhouse.

Thanks to donations from the Garrard County Recycling Center, Jennings Home Center, and The Potting Shed, more than 180 bottle terrariums were given away from 7 - 10 p.m.

Volunteers at Work!

Before the heat of the day on Friday, June 4, 2010, eight individuals gathered at the flood damaged Paint Lick Sportsman's Club to work together to build a better community within the boundaries of Garrard County. Focused with a common goal in mind, Kentucky State Representative, Lonnie Napier; Garrard County Deputy Judge Executive, James Bushnell; Bluegrass Pride personnel Carol Bradford and Pattie Stivender; community volunteers, John Todd, Ken Farris, and Tim Moore; and PLSC president, Deborah Messenger toiled tirelessly from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. to assist the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club with their efforts to tear-out damaged drywall, paneling, wet muddy insulation, and rip-up floor tiles. As the heat index increased, Loretta Adams with Friends of Paint Lick came down and invited all the volunteers to a hearty lunch, cold drinks and a place to refresh before finishing the work schedule of the day.

The Paint Lick Sportsman's Club says a big THANK YOU to this outpouring of help from the community-at-large.

Village Fest

The rain showers of early morning failed to dampen the spirits of attendees at the annual Village Fest in Paint Lick on October 10, 2009. Local and community vendors chased handcrafted wares to more than 500 guests on the grounds of the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club (PLSC). Entertainment was provided by Andy Blyth and his wife Sue Peterson Blyth. Of special note, thanks to the Friends of Paint Lick and the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club members for providing food for the day's activities, including a traditional dinner of soup beans and cornbread from Friends of Paint Lick and an all-you-can-eat supper of fried fish, hush puppies, coleslaw, and homemade cobblers, pies, and cakes courtesy of PLSC.

Paint Lick Recycling Center Dedication

Yesterday was a great day in Paint Lick. We had the dedication of the new, improved and permanent recycling center, followed by a celebration (free) lunch at the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club. You can tell by the smiling faces in this photo, how much everyone enjoyed the event.

PLSC Community Fish Fry

Saturday October 10, 2009 the Village of Paint Lick will be abuzz with activity. Come spend the day at the Paint Lick Village Festival, ending the day with an All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry topped off with all the trimmings... homemade hush puppies, PLSC's famous coleslaw, potato wedges, and mouthwatering home-baked desserts! Advance tickets are only $5. At-the-door tickets will be sold for $6.50.

PLSC Wild Turkey Calling Contest

On Saturday, September 12, 2009, on the Garrard County Courthouse steps , the Paint Lick Sportsman's Club held its' first Wild Turkey Calling Contest in conjunction with the Garrard County Rural Heritage Festival activities.

PLSC member, Mark Hurte rallied Festival's crowd gathered to hear the putters, purrs, and clucks from the contestants competing for the title of Garrard County Wild Turkey Calling Champion

Andrew Baker of Lancaster took home the Grand Champion title. While, Jesselyn Long of Stanford, won the heart of the crowd with her loud cluck followed by a short purr, placing First Runner's Up.

Aside from the Grand Champion trophy awarded to Andrew Baker, Andrew also walked away with a camouflage archery shoulder bag, and hunter's hot seat. Pictured below, Jesselyn showcases her prizes of a camouflage hunting vest, and wild turkey jerky seasonings mix.

PLSC Tackles the Roadside

At day’s end, on Saturday, May 13, 2009, friends and members of the Paint Lick Sportsman’s Club deposited 66 bags and 2 tires at the Garrard County Convenience Center from the roadside clean-up of Old Railroad Grade Road.

Rising early, volunteers: Ron Adkins, Joe Brown, Ward Brown, Michael Guy, the Hatmaker Family (Boone, Jeff, Merry and Shade), Layne Hawley, Jacob Hughes, Mark Hurte, Deborah Messenger, Katie Rollins, and Linda Wardlow, walked along the fog shrouded roadside of Old Railroad Grade Road through dew-damp grass, poison ivy, and briars in search of the elusive household garbage temporarily “housed” amidst the roadside vegetation.

Upon initial collection, the group of 14 collected 43 bags of garbage along the 5.6 miles of roadway within just 3.5 labor-intensive hours. Refueling their energy levels on fresh fruit and bottles of chilled water, three volunteers (Katie Rollins, Ron Adkins, and Deborah Messenger) continued the search into the early afternoon, working beyond the roadside into the ditch lines and along the pasture field fencing to collect an additional 23 bags of trash within just 1.5 miles of the Paint Lick Sportsman’s Club.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of this group of Garrard and Madison County volunteers, travelers along Old Railroad Grade Road will see a new look to the ole way!

PLSC Sponsors Frog Gigging

As the twilight slowly ebbed its' way onto the banks of the Paint Lick Creek, a group of eager "giggers" gathered in hopes of gigging that elusive "Big One". With flashlights in one hand, gigs in the other hand, the giggers searched along the banks of the creek bed for bullfrogs.

The dark, slippery, wet creek bed provided a palette of croaks and bellows to the giggers' ears. All in all, the giggers gathered two bullfrogs, one small Redear Sunfish, and a creek mussel.

Next time, the gaggle of giggers will gander beyond the bed of the Paint Lick Creek in their continuing quest for that croaking, bellowing Bullfrog. "Ribbet Ribbet"!
